Parkland: South Los Angeles has one of the lowest parkland to resident ratios in the city, with less than one half acre per 1000 residents, compared to nearly 60 acres in other areas of Los Angeles.

Community Space: The city hall introduces sustainable development to a community that has no such precedent. Through shared open space and public gardens the center has become a catalyst for social and environmental change in South Los Angeles.

Roof Garden: The public roof garden that is easily accessed and seen from the surrounding streets is planted with over 40 organically grown plant species native to Southern California. Planting on the roof also demonstrates environmental alternatives in an urban context that mitigate storm water runoff, heat island effects and reduce building energy loads
